Just returned back from IWCE 2025 in West Palm Beach, and man… if you’re in the window treatment game and didn’t make it out this year, let me fill you in: The future? It’s automated.

I had the honor of teaching two classes, and I’ve got to say—installers are HUNGRY for knowledge. We dove deep into two big topics:

Installer’s Toolbox: Mastering Efficiency & Customer Satisfaction

This was all about becoming the go-to pro on every jobsite. We built out the ultimate survival kit, discussed real-time problem solving, and how to look and act like the expert, because you are.

Mastering Soft Treatments: Measurements and Installations

This one was near and dear to me. We got into the nitty-gritty of precision, communication with workrooms, and the finesse it takes to install soft treatments with style and zero stress.

Now let’s talk about what was buzzing across the showroom floor…

⚡ Everyone’s Going Motorized

From big names to boutique brands, every company was showcasing automated window treatments. And not just fancy add-ons—core offerings. Clients now expect their shades to rise with the sun and respond to voice commands like it’s no big deal.

Which brings me to the next part…

Not Sure What RF or Zigbee Mean? Let’s Fix That.

Home automation comes with its own language, but I’ll keep it installer-friendly:

  • RF (Radio Frequency): Remote sends a signal. Shade moves. Doesn’t need Wi-Fi. Great for retrofits.
  • PoE (Power over Ethernet): One cable powers the motor and gives it instructions. Super stable. Best used in new builds or with pre-wiring.
  • Zigbee: Think of it like the shade’s social network. It lets smart devices “talk” to each other in a mesh system. Popular in pro smart homes.
  • Matter: This one’s the new hotshot—built to unify all smart devices so your blinds, lights, thermostats (you name it) work together—no matter the brand. Backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, etc.

️Why It Matters to You

Because homeowners are asking for this stuff, and designers expect you to understand it. The more you know, the more valuable you are. You’re not just installing blinds anymore. You’re installing a smart solution.

If you’re not confident in this space yet, don’t sweat it. I’ve got you. We’re cooking up new training options to get you comfortable with motors, protocols, and all the tech talk, without needing a computer science degree.

Final Thoughts from West Palm:

Automation isn’t the future anymore. It’s the now. IWCE proved that loud and clear. But here’s the good news—we’re in the perfect position to ride this wave. Clients trust us. Designers rely on us. We just have to keep learning and keep showing up.

You do that? And you’ll stand out in any market.
